He says when he was younger, someone suggested he start smoking to develop more of the 'rasp' in his voice
Listen to Blake Shelton on iHeartRadio
Blake Shelton is sharing some of the worst career advice he's ever received. The country star tells "Access Hollywood" that when he was younger a music producer once suggested he "start smoking in order to develop more of the rasp" in his voice.
Blake won't name this particular producer, but admits he tried to follow the advice and take up the habit. He says he quit a few months later.
But not having a cigarette-induced rasp hasn't seemed to hurt Shelton's career. He's the Country Music Association's reigning Male Vocalist of the Year. It's an honor Blake has earned for the past three consecutive years.
